Joseph Richard Field, age 90 of Westfield, WI, passed away with his daughters by his side on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. He was born on October 29, 1931 to Thomas and Lyda (King) Field in Terra Alta, West Virginia. Joe married Maxine A. Spiker in 1956 in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.
Although known as Joe since moving to WI in 1973, he was always known as Richard in his home state of West Virginia, as well as by his wife of 65 years, Maxine. After completing his high school education at Bruceton High School in West Virginia in 1950, dad served his country from 1952-1956 in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman. After getting married and starting a family, dad was able to earn his degree in education from WVU where he was also the catcher on the baseball team. He continued his passion of baseball by coaching little league and playing softball up to the age of 70. Dad loved the outdoors and was an avid member of the Westfield White Trackers Snowmobile Club. In the years to follow the family increased to six girls as dad made a career working for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, retiring in 1987. Although he had a gruff communication style at times, dad was a very loyal, honest, hardworking, dependable and could fix anything, with or without duct tape. Dad tolerated much with seven women in the house, which explains the loud sounds of polka music or Johnny Cash 8-tracks blaring from his shop.
Joe is survived by his wife, Maxine; six daughters, Barbara (Peter) Steuck, Montello, WI, Amy (Dean) Beaver, Westfield, WI, Robin (Phil) Swenson, Patty (Kameron) Ellis, Jennifer (Kevin) Ausmus, all of Hinckley, MN and Stacy (Kevin) Shultis, Montello, WI; 22 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald (Elaine) and Robert (Nancy) and granddaughter, Nikki Calnin.
A memorial service for Joe will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Steinhaus-Holly Funeral Home in Westfield with his grandson, James Snow officiating. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Joe’s name.
Dad was never one for goodbyes and this final goodbye is no exception.
