John "Jack" Laing, age 85 of Westfield, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 15, 1921, Township of Harris, son of the late Charles and Nora (Quinn) Laing. Jack married Margaret McGowan on January 24, 1948 in Adams. He served three years in the Army Air Force at Liberal, Kansas. Jack farmed on the Laing Homestead, worked at Badger Ordinance and 33 years for Marquette County Highway Department where he retired in 1983. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Westfield, Westfield VFW Post #8718. Jack enjoyed racing his thorough-bred horses with his son Larry, hunting, fishing, his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margaret; one daughter, Susan (David) Kopach, Coloma; one daughter in law, Sigrid Laing, Westfield; five grandchildren, Michelle (Daniel) Fenske, Westfield, Jay (Jamie) Laing, Westfield, Kelly (Jason) Reetz, Coloma, Kasie (friend Eric Vetrone) Kopach, Coloma and Kristopher Kopach, Coloma; six great grandchildren, Asha, Makaela and Blake Fenske, Tahya and Mya Reetz and Morgan Vetrone; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jack was preceded in death by his son, Larry John Laing; three sisters and one brother.
A funeral service for Jack will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Faith United Methodist Church, Westfield with Rev. William Dow officiating. Inurnment will be in Westfield East Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Steinhaus-Holly Funeral Home, Westfield and on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the hour of service at the church.
