Herbert J. Maier Sr., age 83 of Harrisville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at his home. He was born on November 7, 1926, Township of Roxbury, son of the late Adam and Elizabeth (Kruchten) Maier. Herb married Dolores Barry on June 17, 1950 in Madison. He proudly served his country during WW II with the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S New Jersey. Herb worked as a truck driver, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Westfield, Harrisville Lions Club, American Legion Post #351, Montello and the Teamsters Union. Herb enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, camping and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores; four children, Celeste (Joseph) Jerome, Herbert “Joe” (Lourdes) Maier, Nadine (David) Klapoetke and Tama (Ronald) Zuehls; 14 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; five sisters, Rose Endres, Florina Lenerz, Betty Ann (Rodney) Hutter, Darlene (Eugene) Pings and Joann Riechman; one brother, LaVern (Betty) Maier; his beloved pet dog, Missy; many other relatives and friends. Herb was preceded in death by three sons, John, Barry and Teddy; grandson, Travis Jerome; great grandson, Ashton Zuehls; three brothers, George, Raymond and Ronald Maier; one sister, Ann Mulhall.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Montello with Rev. Michael Richel officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery, Township of Buffalo, Marquette County with full military honors by American Legion Post #351 of Montello. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2010 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Montello and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Herb’s name will be established.
