Gayle Bryce “Smitty” Smith, age 91 of New Berlin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, just short of his 92nd birthday. He was born on September 26, 1931 in the Town of Springfield, Marquette County to Charles and Lillian (Sandow) Smith. Loving husband of 70 years to Leetrice (Pierce) Smith. Father of Randy (Diane) Smith, Jeffrey Smith, and Kenneth (Dawn) Smith. Beloved grandfather of 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Brother-in-law to Linda (Albright) Smith. Also loved by many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Douglas Smith.
Gayle retired with 38 years from Pattern Makers League of North America as a wood pattern maker. He loved hunting, bowling, golfing, trap shooting and world traveling. Gayle was a life member of many associations including, but not limited to, the Air Force Sergeants Association, Armed Forces Top Enlisted Association, the National Rifle Association of America and many more. He spent four years in the Air Force during the Korean War and over 26 years in the Air Force Reserve at General Billy Mitchell Field. He was recalled to active duty in 1962 for the Cuban Crisis and had over 30 years in total service. He will be remembered for all his dedication to our country and his family.
A funeral service for Gayle will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 11:30 a.m. at Steinhaus-Holly Funeral Home in Westfield. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be in Riverside “Lawrence" Cemetery, Town of Westfield.
